Kids & Teenagers Guitar Lessons
Although Hull Guitar Club is mainly focused on adults, I also teach a small number of kids and teenagers in 1-to-1 lessons using a fun, game-based system that keeps them engaged while building real musical skills.
These spaces are very limited, and are usually fully booked – but if your child is keen and you like the sound of what’s below, you’re welcome to get in touch.
How kids’ lessons work
Kids’ lessons are 1-to-1, with a parent in the room, and they’re built around a big 12-sided dice and a set of musical “mini-games”.
Each dice roll decides what we work on next. Games might include:
- Learning riffs
- Strumming pattern challenges
- Chord changes
- Songs they choose
- Quick music theory quizzes
- Learning notes on the fretboard
- Scale games
- Rhythm games like passing a ball on a certain beat to build timing
- Rock–paper–scissors using chords
Each game lasts around 5–10 minutes, and we rotate between them based on their energy and focus.
Over the course of an hour, they end up working on a wide range of skills – technique, rhythm, listening, musical understanding – but it feels like playing a series of fun challenges rather than grinding through one piece over and over.
If a particular riff or song really captures their attention, we’ll happily stay with it for longer and build on that interest. The format gives them a lot of agency, while I quietly make sure the core skills are being developed in the background.
There’s also a slightly more “grown up” version of this system for teenagers, with extras like simple songwriting challenges and more advanced musical ideas – still using the dice to keep things easy-going.
Who it’s for
This format works best for:
- Kids who are roughly 9–12 and genuinely want to learn guitar, and are happy to join in with the games and musical challenges
- Teenagers who are keen to make real musical progress and build their guitar skills week by week
- Families who are looking for fun, structured lessons that build real musicianship, not just copying a few riffs from YouTube
Lessons are light-hearted, but the skill-building is serious: over time, kids and teenagers become well-rounded young musicians, comfortable with rhythm, technique and basic music understanding, all in a relaxed environment.
What parents say
“My son Jesse has been with Tim for 2 years now and has learnt a priceless life skill. The lessons are completely personalised to my 9-year-old’s needs and are super chill.
Jesse has grown more confident in playing guitar and this has shown in his daily life. It really has become an important part of his life and helped his personality grow.”
Ben (Jesse’s dad)
“My son Matty started his lessons with Tim at Hull Guitar Club and hasn’t looked back!
The progress he has made has been amazing to watch, and with Tim’s attention to detail and skilful guidance, Matty is fast becoming a great guitarist.
Each lesson is very well thought out, clearly showing the dedication Tim puts into both enhancing his student’s musicianship and giving them the freedom to express themselves in a friendly and relaxed environment.
Both Matty and I would highly recommend using Hull Guitar Club no matter what level you are at in your musical journey.”
James (Matty’s dad)
“We considered a couple of other guitar teachers before deciding on Tim, but I’m so glad we did. Ted loves his lessons, and he’s always keen to show us the latest thing he’s learned.
Tim is really flexible with Ted’s lessons, which really helps us when, on occasion, we have asked to reschedule because of work etc.
All in all we couldn’t recommend Tim enough. Ted’s really come on much quicker than we expected, and is well on his way to rock stardom.”
Jamie (Ted's dad)
Availability
Because my main focus is on adult classes, I only run a very small number of kids/teenagers 1-to-1 slots.
These are currently full.
If you’re interested in a future space:
- You’re welcome to get in touch and I can let you know if/when a slot becomes available, or point you towards other local options if that’s more helpful at the time.
