Adult guitar lessons in Hull designed around how adults actually learn
Have you always wanted to play guitar, but never quite started?
Or maybe you’ve had a few lessons in the past, but life got busy, you stopped practising… and the guitar ended up gathering dust in the corner again.
At Hull Guitar Club, I specialise in guitar lessons for adults, built around real music and small, band-style training classes.
You get a clear, structured path and plenty of guided playing time, so your skills – and your confidence – grow week by week.
Learning Guitar as an Adult Is Different
Most traditional lessons are built for kids or teenagers:
- You’re shown a lot of information in a 1-1 lesson
- You’re sent home with a big list of things to practise
- Next week you feel bad that you didn’t have time to do it all
- You end up going over the same material again and again
For a lot of adults who pick up guitar in their 30s, 40s, 50s and beyond, this often leads to:
- Frustration (“why am I still stuck on this?”)
- Feeling behind or “not talented enough”
- Quitting altogether
It’s not that you can’t learn guitar.
It’s that the system isn’t designed for you.
How Hull Guitar Club Is Different
Instead of traditional “show and tell” lessons, I run small, band-style training classes for adults.
The focus is on doing most of the work in the lesson, so you still see real progress even if life gets in the way between sessions.
Key Features
Small, band-style training classes (usually 1–3 players)
Designed so you can work at your own level while learning in a musical, mini-band setting.
Custom-written practice tracks designed for adults
I write practice songs specifically for my students. Each track trains real-world skills like rhythm, chord changes, timing, picking, musical confidence and more.
Progress happens in the lesson
Because we do lots of repetitions with real music in the session, you’ll still improve week by week – even in the weeks where practice time at home is limited.
Confidence playing with others
You’ll get used to playing alongside other guitarists in a relaxed, supportive setting. Very quickly, this starts to feel comfortable and natural.
Flexible lesson times
I know work and family plans change. My schedule makes it easier for adults to move their lesson time when they need to.
Complete Beginners Start Here
...And for complete beginners, we start with 1-to-1 lessons until you’re comfortable with the basics, then move into the band-style training format when you’re ready.
This is a key part of how Hull Guitar Club works. It means beginners build solid habits early, gain confidence step-by-step, and feel clear about what to do next at every stage.
What a Typical Song Cycle Looks Like
Most of your learning happens through three-week “song cycles” using custom practice tracks I’ve written specifically for my adult students.
Week 1 – Learn the song & get comfortable
- You plug in with headphones and play along to the track
- We go section by section, starting with very simple parts
- You choose the layer that matches your current level
- By the end of the session, you can play through the basic version of the song
You get:
- Printed tabs and chord diagrams
- Access to the track on SoundCloud
- An optional app-based way to loop, slow down, and explore sections in more depth
Week 2 – Build skills & add layers
- We run the song again and again to build muscle memory
- You can start adding more challenging layers if you’re ready
- I help you improve technique, timing, and how your parts sound within the music
- More advanced players get extra lines, fills or rhythm challenges
Week 3 – Plug in and play as a band
- We switch from headphones to real guitar amps
- Each person takes the parts they’ve been working on
- You play the song together as a small band
- We finish by reviewing what you’ve achieved and the skills you’ve built
The week after, we move on to a new practice track that’s designed around the next skills you need. Over time, this means you always know what you’re working on next and why.

Here’s a short clip from one of our “plug in and play” weeks, where Ian and Rob are playing their parts together in a small band-style training class.
Knowledge milestones: just enough theory, when you need it
From time to time, there are key bits of music theory that make the techniques you’re working on – and the fretboard itself – much easier to understand.
When that happens, I’ll invite you to a short “knowledge milestone” session – usually 1-to-1, or occasionally with another student who needs the same thing. In these sessions we’ll:
- Cover just enough theory to unlock what you’re about to play
- Tie it directly to the chords, scales or fretboard shapes you’re using
- Make sure you know how to apply it straight away
There’s no pressure to memorise pages of theory or sit exams – it’s all about giving you the right concepts at the right time, so the music you’re playing makes more and more sense.
As my student Neil said "I have gained an understanding of what I am playing, why I am playing it, why certain things work and why certain things don't."
Is This for Me?
Hull Guitar Club is designed for adults in Hull and the surrounding areas who:
- Are starting from scratch and want a clear, friendly path
- Have dabbled with YouTube or lessons before but never really “stuck” with it
- Want to feel confident playing in front of others, not just at home alone
- Like the idea of playing with other people eventually
“I have been a music lover forever, and at the mature age of 50, decided I wanted to play my own music… Now six months later, I am thoroughly enjoying playing and continuing to learn with Tim’s support… Tim makes learning very relaxing, is extremely supportive and applies no pressure to progress at a certain rate, so you learn at your own pace…”

How to get started:
The best way to see if this style of adult guitar lessons is for you is to start with a quick phone chat.
I like to do this before booking an intro because it keeps everything clear, personal, and relevant to what you actually want from the guitar.
Step 1 – A short phone call
We’ll have a brief chat to:
- Talk about your goals and musical taste
- Make sure this approach fits what you’re looking for
- Walk through how the first steps work for your current level
If we both feel like we’re a good match, we’ll book your free introductory session.
Step 2 – Your free intro session
In your intro session we will:
- Play a simple piece of music that fits your current ability level (even if you’re a total beginner)
- If you’re new to guitar, we’ll also go over how to read guitar tab
- Decide together whether it’s a good fit
If you’d like to get started:
- The easiest way is to Call, text or WhatsApp me on 07949355445
- Or, if you prefer, you can fill in the contact form on this site
You don’t need years of experience or loads of free time.
You just need a clear, supportive path that’s designed for adults.
Frequently Asked Questions
I’m a complete beginner — how do I start?
You’ll start with 1-to-1 lessons until you’re comfortable with the basics.
Then we’ll move into the band-style training format step by step when you’re ready.
Most brand-new players start with a short 1-to-1 foundations course after the intro, so you feel fully confident with the essentials before moving into the main training format.
How small are the training classes?
Very small. Most training classes are one, two, or three adult players. That size creates the perfect mini-band feel, so you can learn the real musical skills that come from playing with others.
The 1-to-1 foundations course is separate from the main training classes, so you’ll always start in the most comfortable format for your level.
Will I get personalised coaching in this format?
Yes — absolutely. These sessions aren’t a passive, “sit back while the teacher does everything” style of lesson.
They’re coached training classes where you’re playing real music throughout, and I’m guiding, adjusting, and refining your playing in real time.
Because the format is built around you doing the work during the lesson, you get a highly personal learning experience with clear guidance as you play.
What if I don’t have much time to practise at home?
I know most adults are fitting guitar around real life, so the sessions are designed to keep you moving forward even in weeks when practise time is limited.
We do plenty of repetition and skill-building during the lesson itself, and when you do get time to practise at home, you’ll have clear, simple things to work on rather than a long, overwhelming list.
I’ve tried lessons before and didn’t stick with it — will this be different?
Most likely, yes... Many adults struggle with traditional lessons because the progress depends heavily on practising alone between sessions.
Here, the structure and practice tracks make the next steps clear and achievable, and the momentum is built inside the lesson.
And when you do get time to practise at home, those same tracks give you a fun, guided way to keep building the skills between sessions.
Can different ability levels train together?
Yes — and it’s a big advantage... Each practice track includes easier and more advanced options.
So newer players can work on a version that feels comfortable, while more experienced players take on extra challenges — all while learning the same piece of music.
What guitar do I need?
The skills you learn apply to both electric and acoustic styles.
For the training classes themselves, I ask students to use an electric guitar so the room volume stays comfortable and controlled.
And if you don’t have one yet, I have a spare electric guitar you can use while you’re getting started.
What happens after the phone chat?
If we both feel like we’re a good match after the phone chat, we’ll book your free introductory session.
Your intro session is 1-to-1, and we will:
- Play a simple piece of music
- Learn how to read guitar tab if it's new to you
- Decide together whether it’s a good fit
If you decide to continue after the intro, your next steps will depend on your current level:
- Brand-new players normally start with a short 1-to-1 foundations course.
- Existing players usually do a couple of 1-to-1 sessions first.
After that, you’ll move into the main band-style training format at the point that makes the most sense for your ability level.
Can I change lesson times if my schedule shifts?
Yes.
Adults have busy lives, and the scheduling is designed to be as flexible as possible.
