Hi, I’m Tim, and I run Hull Guitar Club.
I specialise in helping adults in Hull go from “I’ve always wanted to do this” (or “I’ve been stuck at the same level for years”) to playing real music with other people in a relaxed, structured way.
I’ve been teaching guitar for the last five years, and I have over two decades of experience as a musician, playing in bands, gigging and recording.
Why I Teach Adults the Way I Do
When I first started teaching, I taught in the traditional way: 1-to-1 lessons, sat in a room, working through songs and exercises together.
What I noticed over time was that a lot of adults found it hard to stick with. The lessons could start to feel like a chore rather than something they genuinely looked forward to each week. Progress was happening, but the joy wasn’t always there in the way I knew it could be.
Because of my own background playing in bands, I’ve always known how special it feels to make music with other people. There’s nothing quite like that moment when everything locks in and you’re part of something bigger than just your own guitar. I wanted my students to experience that feeling too – not “one day in the distant future”, but as part of the way they learnt from the start.
So I wrote some simple jam material and invited a few students to try a band-style session, playing along to a practice track I’d created. I was blown away by how much they loved it. One adult student said, “I love these practice tracks – can we just do these?” and that was the turning point. I listened to their feedback and leaned fully into what they were enjoying most. It quickly became clear that this way of learning really resonated with my adult students – they were making better progress, and enjoying the whole process more than they ever had with traditional 1-to-1 lessons.
From there, the Hull Guitar Club system grew naturally: very small, band-style sessions with other adults, playing along to tailored practice tracks and building their skills while actually feeling like they’re in a band. The biggest difference I see, compared to traditional lessons, is the amount of joy it brings. For many of my students, that hour each week is a real escape from everyday life – a chance to focus on something creative, feel like themselves, and simply enjoy the experience of playing music. Everything I’ve built at Hull Guitar Club is designed to give adults more of that.
What It’s Like to Learn with Me
If you join Hull Guitar Club, here’s what you can expect from me as a teacher:
- Relaxed but focused sessions – I take the music seriously, but the atmosphere is calm, friendly and low-pressure. You’re allowed to make mistakes, ask questions and learn at your own pace.
- Clear structure, no waffle – you’ll always know what we’re working on and why, rather than feeling like we’re just winging it from week to week.
- Attention to detail – I listen closely to how you’re playing and give specific, practical feedback that actually helps you sound better, not just “good job”.
- A genuine interest in your progress – I’m not trying to turn everyone into a shredder. I’m interested in helping you become a confident, musical player who enjoys picking up the guitar.
As one of my students, Chris, said: “Tim's lessons are well planned, with goals that are appropriate for my level of ability and he provides constructive advice and feedback, all in a friendly and supportive environment.”
Outside of Teaching
Outside of lessons, I’m still very much a guitar geek – I spend a lot of time practising, learning new skills and working on musical projects when I can.
When I’m not playing the guitar, I’m usually with my partner and our cat, friends and family, or doing something active.
